The entirety of Stormy Monday is just texture and atmosphere with convoluted tragedy. Most characters are just figures to be carefully placed in compositions and situations for maximum style and cool. That’s not to say it’s beautiful, rather, in true neo-noir fashion, it’s seedy and bleak. It all works because it just nails the grimy low level cool of noir with some flash and savagery. Dirty windows, smoky pubs, and the haze of being too drunk/confused when the music in the bar is too loud and you can barely hear what anyone’s saying. A somehow perfect and vivid night spoiled by the darkness. Unfairly grim.
And idk, it helps that Sean Bean is so effortlessly cool in this and Melanie Griffith movies are just so soothing to me
