i wish i had a quote to sum up this movie but the dialogue is so sparse that i can’t neatly sum up how i feel about this movie like i usually do in that manner, and i honestly think that’s the perfect encapsulation of this film. this is a very gorgeously shot film, and i was really intrigued by some of the cinematic shots and choices. it’s excellently acted by joe swanberg as the quiet and reserved richard akin, and a good outing from sophie straub as sarah, but robert longstreet is the main force here as the vile jeremiah. the fact that we’re able to fully see how vile and reprehensible and controlling jeremiah is, despite the fact that we spend so little time with him, says so much. the score is discordant and ominous, giving the film a very tense and anxious film at times, so much so that at times it feels like this movie is masquerading as a horror film. the main factor that holds this movie back from a higher rating is the lack of a central storyline. we get enough of a storyline to guide us to where the film ultimately takes us, and i may be asking for a little hand holding, but i just wanted to know more about these characters. the final frantic fifteen or so minutes are what makes this movie worth watching, but not much happens in the other fifty. still a good film from josephine baker and very worth your time, if only for that ending.
