You could save yourself about two hours and just listen to the song this is based on. Bruce Springsteen manages to capture more nuance and produce better storytelling in five or so minutes than Sean Penn does in over two hours here. I get why people are drawn to this, it's driven by one really, really good performance (Viggo Mortensen) and a couple of pretty good ones (Charles Bronson, Patricia Arquette). Besides a hand full of moments between the two brothers, this movie is a slog to get through.
