I remember watching Bahubali for the first time and being so confused the whole way through; it's definitely gotten a lot better after rewatching it through the years, though. The CGI is a little janky in some areas, and to be honest there are corny scenes and dialogue here and there. But the cast do an amazing job, especially Ramya Krishnan, Nassar and Rana, and the costumes and sets are absolutely stunning. If you're looking to watch more from Tollywood, give this a go.

Who are we to rate this masterpiece when you all should be even grateful to take part in this beautiful journey and got blessed for 3 hours straight. 5 stars are for movies but this, this is a way of life.

this one is kinda hard to rate. I want to give this one star and five stars at the same time. because on one side the plot is just amazing. I was thrilled from start to finish, and I just fell in love with the lore, the action, the mythology of it all. I'm usually bored when a movie is too much about war and action, but here you can actually feel what's at stake. and the WOMEN HERE!!!! best part of the movie is seeing women being absolute badasses, rulers, warriors. I also really loved shiva's character, he's so likable as a hero because he even if he's the perfect super strong hero he's not limited to that. hell, I even liked the romance part. like, I REALLY loved the movie.
but yeah. a LOT of things made me go..... ugh. and I'm NOT EVEN talking about the CGI. if it was just that, fine, honestly.
but gosh the sexism.
yes there's so many strong women portrayed here, and it's not just women who can fight and can lead, but women who actually do so. but !!!! it's only when men are not in a position to do so. everytime a man is there, woop!! no more women!! shiva is here now, so avanthika twisted her ankle and shiva takes her duty! the princes are of age, the queen isn't to rule anymore! in every important battle, it's only men fighting! women in the background! so yes, numerous of them DO have their moment on screen and I genuinely love those, it just feels unachieved.
but can we please talk about that scene with shiva and avanthika? because what the fuck? I liked their romance even if it appeared out of nowhere lol, but that scene was just glamorized SA where shiva undresses her and puts makeup on her, but it's fine because she's thinks she's pretty now!! SHUT UP. I WANT TO KILL YOU. honestly it angers me so much that despite being a strong WARRIOR, with so much will and fury and honor, because she's a woman AND the love interest she's reduced to her physical appearance, to being attractive/found attractive by the love interest. now, yes you can still argue that it's sweet because he had noticed that she felt bad about her appearance in the river scene, but 1) if that was really the intention they could've done it another way by keeping her as she is and 2) doesn't change the fact she did not look consenting.
also I want someone to explain this to me. what the fuck is up with kalakeyas??? explain to me why the clan that is described as brutal, morbid savages and rapist are ALL!!! ALL portrayed as black and obliviously in a much darker skin? which I suspect a LOT of those are actual blackfaces ? why does they seem to imitate khoïsan language (an ethnic group from around the southern part of the African continent) with tongue clicking, why they are portrayed with animalistic behaviors and cliché symbols from African tribes ? yeah, racism.
so as much as I loved the movie I just can't close my eyes on this, and it really did take me out of the experience a few times, even more than whatever this cgi is (it's so bad tho omg).
that's why I'm angry because FUCK the movie IS good, but it's also TERRIBLE. I'll still watch the rest, hoping it's better on those themes.
