As children, the introverted Smile was being bullied by a gang of kids until the brash Peco comes by and chases all of them them away. Table Tennis IS this serious. After all, as Demon says: "There's more than diarrhea that drives a man to the toilet. ... I need to cry a little."
P.S: Request to officially make this Koto Endo's cannon backstory

A milquetoast plot realised with the utmost heart and soul…
I’m a sucker for light-hearted sports films, especially when said sport is used as a backdrop to explore more existential themes. Themes of life, brotherhood, self-worth and fear of mediocrity are explored brilliantly and are working two fold through the dynamic of the two leads.
Outside of the two main characters is a considerable grouping of side characters and even though they aren’t as fleshed out, still feel complete within their arcs.
The edit is hyper stylistic, the camera work is at times playful, at times frenetic adding a layer of emotional heft.
Genuinely came into this anticipating a fun time, something Shaolin Soccer-esque but instead stumbled across a new all-timer.
