Writing an essay about reception of the Echo and Narcissus myth so here's some of my very rough first watch notes: he rejects both [the female and male dancers] and it is only after meeting his reflection for the first time that he experiences true happiness, that he smiles and it feels genuine, that his dance is fluid and joyous instead of tightly restrained; he finds freedom in finding himself, love in finding himself; ironic enough as it is. his ‘reflection’ appears before him and they dance together, timid at first, a boyish first love; constantly disappearing and reappearing in Narcissus’ view, the unreachable social standard, the unreachable perfect, the unattainable perfect; the unattainable self. until oneness is finally reached, however illusive and temporary. until he finally dies, depicted by McLaren as being trapped in a prison, one inexplicably of his own making. there is no one true self, and the obsession with it leads to nowhere
