Not what I was expecting (in a good way!)
This little cult-classic has been on my radar for about a year now, and while I had some interest in watching it, I wholly thought it was just going to be about a gross little alien running around wreaking havoc. I'm glad to say that this is not the case! Yes, the alien design is indeed a gross little creature, but that gross little alien isn't the only thing going on in the film. There are some really disgusting effects, only amplified by the low-budget route they had to take to achieve them. And as always, practical effects show they are indeed superior! I wouldn't want to spoil too much here, but if you can go into this film with the same preconceived thoughts that I had, you will come out pleasantly surprised.
For what little budget they had, I can't hate on the effects too much. Most of what was offered was awesome, don't get me wrong, but there were definitely some cheesy moments that I'm sure would've been great if the budget had been just a bit higher. I also was not a fan of the music for the vast majority of this film, very distracting at times.
If you're into low-budget '80s creature features and haven't yet seen Xtro, give it a watch -- it's well worth it. While definitely not for everyone, I see now why this has a small cult following; it's pretty sweet.
