Went into this film with somewhat of high expectations as it was recommended to me by a friend, the beginning felt a tad slow but now as I sit here writing this I realize how important every scene in the beginning was. The pacing, acting, and dialogue all tie this film together near perfectly just driving to the climax that seemingly goes on for ages. The comedy sprinkled into this film was great, was not overdone and did not take away from the more serious nature of the film. The ending of this film is a real backstab. An ending that was not expected and once it hits you realize just how evil a human can be to someone else. Knowing the history of this war and waiting to see some of that brutality against the Chinese but never getting it only to then have the roles reversed and once again reversed was a very very interesting play on this history.

This film eviscerates all sides, humanity, and its ability to eat itself from the inside. And it’s funny. Snippy dialogue. Farcical. With an edge of high concept thriller with its central conceit cut together with shifting time frames. A lot of is is really juicy.

holy. shit. this film really brought out the fucking vocals out of me. both the loud laughter, the gut-wrenching gasps, and the shrieking cries. i've never seen a film execute actual laughable comedy with the most unpleasing, gruesome violence ever. near the 2-hour mark, when the party got disrupted and the old man got thrown in the fire, the local villager got pounded to fall down a well, and the kid got brutally one-swinged stabbed right in the head with his eyes open and body crunched, i tell you, i had to actually stop the film, take deep breaths, leave my laptop in the room, and had to drink some cold ass water to relax and recharge myself. i couldn't stomach it and needed water before i choked or puked. an exhausting, hilarious, bold, and petrifying experience, with a fuck you message to war and its futility with the hypocritical destruction it brings nation to nation. this film reminds us that even in such absurdity, we are lost for words and actions, and all we can do is laugh. laugh through the wholesomeness, laugh through the horror, and to laugh at ourselves.
