Really hard for me to give this a bad rating because I have loved these films so much, but unfortunately the majority of this is just reminiscing with clips from the previous four films.

Some of it makes you question who it’s made for, at times it reads as though it’s intended for people new to the collection, it’s all very, if you missed this one don’t worry, we’ll explain. 

Perhaps in 1979, after 17 years since the first, people may not have rewatched any, and so this would be super nostalgic, but it definitely is an issue that atleast 50% of the film is retrospective.

I hold a special place in my heart for the whole Antoine Doinel series. Although the last title in the series mainly consists of flashbacks from previous films, it is fascinating to see how Truffaut develops a character whose adolescent years and life the viewer had been following for 20 long years. Furthermore, framing the flashbacks through Antoine's autobiographical novel creates a fascinating interplay between the nature of memories, individual truth, and convenient fabrication that is open to interpretation by both the characters as well as the viewer. Even though Antoine is a completely immature, narcissistic, and pathetic character, it's hard not to feel sympathy for him (but even more for all the women in his life that had to deal with his bullshit).
