I’ve wanted to see this ever since seeing Renegade at the Apollo last year, during the Q&A with the actor performing Sidney Poitier pointing out that despite being the first black man to win an Oscar, not a single film of his was available to stream on Netflix.
Even when doing a by-the-book saviour teacher film, he elevates the content, glides through the part (except his dancing). The film is dated in its language, its sexism, and some of the filming techniques - the photo montage of their visit to the V&A and Natural History Museum the most jarring.
It was also enjoyable for me as someone from East London to see how much has changed, and even in the 90s hadn’t in schools - the schoolyard reminds me greatly of the older building still in use at Rushmore Primary School.
