Rick sets up an escape for Joe, assuming that Joe will be killed while fleeing. I love the cinematography in this one my top shots from this are the two cars on the beach one and the final fight between Rick and Joe seeing the flames blaze while the men fight is great.
The concept of Joe being in-between two women kind of plays out like a devil and angel on your shoulders. Ann is the lawful one wanting Joe to turn himself in while Pat is aiding Joe in his escaping of the US borders in search of a new life.
Mann does great with shots like the fugitive getting gunned down in front of the house about halfway through the movie which was probably stunning to see in the 40s and then beachhouse fight scene was shot really good in a blocking perspective.
