God this was so good.
A controlled, clinical study of obsession that somehow feels even more relevant 45 years later. Rupert would’ve thrived on stan Twitter.
De Niro is incredible, as always, but in a way that feels distinctly different from the personas he’d deploy in later Scorsese collaborations. Rupert carries this forced, fragile confidence that never quite coheres, which makes him both pathetic and deeply unsettling.
(Cue cards scene was so funny bro, especially feeling like I'm not supposed to be laughing rn)
Great movie.
