Watched this on a whim on Max. What a fun seafaring adventure! Having recently read The Way of Kings I couldn’t help but make comparisons between Kaladin and Captain Thorpe.

I loved how much of a mustache-twirling English villain Lord Wolfingham was. So much of this movie felt like kids playing pirates on the playground (compliment). It’s like the ideal noble pirate story and I found myself getting swept up in the boyish fun. Of course, that comes with an incredibly boring female lead, even by 1940s standards. And the lecture Thorpe gives Maria about Spain stealing from other cultures when he’s fighting for England is worthy of Richter scale level eye-rolls. The same treasures he plunders from Spain that Spain plundered from South America literally end up on the queen’s neck.

Still, it delivered on what I was hoping to get out of a classic swashbuckling film, and it was fascinating to see the very obvious WWII propaganda at the end.

The ship sequences of this film are phenomenal. I have not been graced with such fantastic piracy in film since first viewing Pirates of the Caribbean years ago. There were two full-scale ships built for the film that were used in certain shots, but also many miniatures. The costumes are also wonderful. They may be a little cheesy at times, but they are pretty accurate to what we know of Spanish and English attire.

If there's one thing The Sea Hawk does really well it's its ability to transport you back to the 1500's. A slightly more modern film might have introduced to many unpolished special effects techniques which would take you out of the experience. Since this film used what they had at the time and committed to matching the authenticity of the era, it ages very well.

The story isn't really anything special. It's a typical scoundrel to hero kind of tale with predictable moments throughout. The romance felt a little forced and it can be a little boring at times.

That said, I think there's a lot of heart in The Sea Hawk. You can tell that there was a real desire to make a good film and the actors are all giving it their best. It's a solid film that's worth the watch if you're in the mood for a black and white period piece.

44. Claude Rains

Errol Flynn is one of the most fun actors to watch on screen, while I haven’t watched too many I love in it all. He is just so entertaining and charming. That being said beyond him this movie is a pretty good swashbuckler but not to a level of Adventures of Robin Hood or Captain Blood even, but I think that’s the fault of a dull villain and a vanilla love interest, but otherwise still a fun movie
