Truly I can say to myself that this film is one of those hidden gems in just any cinema. Like I feel like it's truly underrated because it actually sucked me in and pulled me in and the plot was so engrossing. Okay for starters I watched this for Claudia Cardinale and while admittedly she didn't tend to appear in this very much, I will say queen served but also I was still interested and fine with the fact she wasn't in it that much because it was so amazing. The film critiques the justice system showing how messy it is, as it is hard to find truth. So the detective Ingravallo struggles not only with evidence by the nature of truth. I also found the corruption and hypocrisy so interesting. The movie is about a robbery and then a murder happens literally next door. But almost all the characters loosely connected are very suspicious. Beneath the surface of this façade of respectability there lies deception, secrets and manipulation. There's so much shocking things that occur within this film that is played so well. Like the idea of withheld information which keeps the viewer like me in suspense. You find yourself asking questions why did the husband do that. The husband is a major suspect for the murder of his wife. We find out in the plot that he is a very person who is riddled with moral contradictions. Outwardly he appears to be a respectable man, perhaps tortured in a way. But when he reveals his wrongdoings it really is messed up. To hear how he cheated on his wife and literally groomed a minor girl. That's one example, even the other suspect a doctor is involved in shady doings. I find Italy's films so interesting postwar because it doesn't like to show glamour or anything fake, but just stark truth and horror and this film is an example of that. I feel like this is a bit of a satire of the police force. There's even a man who rebukes them for not being able to solve murder cases. Which is very interesting. Even the characters have a bit of a comical feel to them and they're slow, sometimes they might accidentally let someone get away or maybe they'll slap a person in questioning. Also honestly the revelation of the murderer was so unexpected because I did not expect that. It's really smart how Pietro Germi directed this film. Adding to that as the lead he gave a very good performance admittedly! This is kinda an ensemble cast in a way so I think they all did well. Claudia Cardinale was also amazing especially in the last few minutes clearly wasn't just a pretty face 🤭🤭 but like I said she wasn't in it that much and I think that was not her voice because as a Tunisian born Italian she only spoke French and Sicilian. But she was amazing honestly and I'm excited to see more of her films. I have yet to see her as a lead! Really enjoyed this one fans!
