Where the Red Fern Grows, has a beautiful story, hence why they made the movie in the first place. The bones of the book are solid, and structurally sound. However, this film did not quite pack the emotional punch that I once felt reading as a boy. The acting was just ok, and the dogs felt like side characters, rather than the true pinnacle that they were always meant to be. If they had a slightly higher budget and slightly better dogs, it may have faired well. Hopefully the 2003 one is a bit bettter.
