I love a good atmospheric folk horror film. The lighting in this one was absolutely phenomenal, with all the blues, yellows and oranges. It felt like stepping into a painting at times. The atmosphere of a film can often make or break it for me, and this film did not disappoint in that department. The emotional core was also a strong point for me. Tragedy permeates all throughout the film from beginning to end. I went in expecting another campy 80s horror flick, and got a genuinely heart wrenching film about rage, trauma and grief. Will definitely be giving this one a rewatch in October.

Finally got around to rewatching this even if I was working on other stuff during. It’s not great but it was one of the first horror films I remember watching. I saw a tv version of it, I believe on the Syfy network, with my grandpa as a kid.

I think this film is pretty solid and delivers the 80s horror atmosphere effectively with an Appalachian twist that makes it memorable. The acting from the teenage characters is rather awful a significant portion of the time, though this really is par for the course. I find the father to be extremely believable and was disheartened by his descension and eventual end. The effects are clearly expensive and appear sparingly but Pumpkinhead does look great when on screen.
