In its brief running time, Old Joy manages to be a simple but really beautiful film about change, drifting apart, and feeling lost as life keeps moving. The title fits perfectly it’s about old feelings and old connections, the parts of ourselves we outgrow, and the bittersweet shift into new chapters. Watching it just makes me think about how much I love my friends, and how precious those connections are even as everything around us changes.

If ASMR was a film, this would be it. This is my second watch and it still relaxes me. This could be my white noise when I sleep. A short, but sweet (and very good) film.

I remembered loving Wendy and Lucy when I first watched it, but I thought it was kind of boring if I’m being honest. Now that I’ve gotten more into slower cinema I think that if I rewatched that it could be a 5. This is a very similar film, but man did this make me sad. The whole film is about growing. Whether growing apart or growing together the film tackles growth in a very beautiful way. Not to mention the shots of the Oregon woods are nothing short of perfect.

Beautifully simplistic in its storytelling and you just feel every line, pause, and look between these two guys. Both Kelly Reichardt films I’ve seen do such a masterful job of creating characters that feel truly lived in. Also has a lot to say about the pressures and the weight of modern life and how people either confront it directly or use some sort of distraction to run away from it.
