This movie is bonkers in all of the right ways while also being able to go through all of its concepts and ideas in a way that doesn’t feel overstuffed or convoluted. 

Sam Neil is a particular standout as he’s perfectly able to portray someone who is (reasonably so) losing his mind as everything he took for as fact about the universe crumbles and is reshaped around him.

Has some really effective practical horror effects. The story itself didn’t hit me as hard as i wanted it too. Still enjoyed this but came away slightly disappointed with higher expectations from Carpenter.

It’s amazing how much of this I forgot. It ends a little abruptly, but it has a nice Twilight Zone feel to it that feels so distinctly at home in the 90’s that it gives the entire film a sort of unshakable charm. Psychologically, it’s ambitious, tackling the nature of reality, religion, storytelling, and the human mind in ways that remind me how great of a storyteller John Carpenter was.

A great rewatch! Definitely picking this up on DVD at some point. Sam Neill is awesome in it.
