Must a movie be “good?” Isn’t it enough to have claymation opening credits, schlocky spy gadgets, and a scenery-chewing Vincent Price?

They didn't need to go that hard with the opening credits for a movie like this.

Frankie Avalon channels Bond in this one as he plays the bumbling Agent 00-1/2 (or 00-1/4, since he gets demoted early on). He is perfectly pathetic for the part, where he investigates the new scheme of Vincent Price’s nefarious Dr. Goldfoot: he wants to use gorgeous robot women to gold dig rich men! Sounds a lot like modern times but with less scamming of broke desperate men.

The film is pretty blatantly designed to lure young men into the theaters - and perhaps the real Dr. Goldfoot was whoever decided to make a movie full of 60s girls in bikinis, a genius move since this got a full sequel a year later - but deep under that is a campy 1965 adventure that doesn’t take itself too seriously. There’s definitely something going on here between Igor and Goldfoot that i won’t elaborate on; it seems pretty obvious once you watch. Overall, though, it’s fun and I personally enjoyed it. Vincent Price especially does a great job in his role, but I like the chemistry between Avalon and Dwayne Hickman; I understand they did a few films like these together and it’s clear to see why. And there’s a great chase scene to boot!

Almost laughably poorly dubbed, this movie is barely saved by Vincent Price hamming it up like a rabid hog, and a few stupidly clever visual gags.

Somehow still a better Austin Powers movie than 2 out of the 3.
