It has been 5 years since The Man From Nowhere, what has Won Bin been up to?
I picked this up blindly cause the cover looks badass and the blurb on the cover said "ACTION SCENES RIVAL THE RAID 2", which, let us not even lie here, had the best action scenes of any action film in recent years. And then I read more about it and found out it's from the same director that did The Man From Nowhere, which, again, we all truly know is one of the best South Korean movies ever made. So naturally, I had the greatest of expectations for No Tears For The Dead. I was thinking it was gonna be a captivating drama with inventive action sets interspersed throughout.
Well.
Let's talk about the "action scenes". There were what? about 3 of them in total. The best of the pack, was about 5 seconds long. Granted it did kind of end with a knee kick that was impressive. But I was left with a "that's it?" face, however you imagine that looks like. I was looking for that same emotional punch I got with The Man From Nowhere and although it came close, it just never reached far enough. A child gets killed, mother grieves, and spends most of her time crying on the floor - that got old real quick. Even the brief glimpses we get of young Gon and his mother was more effective and tugged at my heartstrings just a tad bit harder.
And can we talk about the dialogue. Maybe let's just not.
I was gonna give this 3.5 stars but the more I think about it, the more I grow to dislike it. I'll leave it at 2.5 for now. What a shame.
