This is Howard Hawks' swan song and I am sorry to say that after this, I think it is definitely time to retire. This is essentially a mixture of Red River and Rio Bravo and it just isn't anything special at all. It could have seriously been cut down by about 20 minutes and there was just not enough emphasis on John Wayne's reason for helping out in the first place. The character's fit the molds so boringly and it just feels aimless at times. I wish I ended up liking this more. The good parts of the film are still good. They are just carbon copies of other films and that just doesn't do it for me. To some people this is a classic but to me I just think it is a legendary director's career going out with a dying moan rather than a bang.

Pretty boring if you ask me. I did like the bit of seventies flavor in there but overall I feel like the genre probably was over by this point. Time to bring some life back into it.
