Jean Renoir’s La Chienne is purposefully devoid of any charm. It’s a grim film that mainly spends its time dismantling any hope that its characters might procure.
I don’t know what it is, but despite the quality of Renoir’s films, I find them hard to connect with. The first hour, despite its thematics, felt somewhat outdated, and it wasn’t until the final part of the film that I was truly captivated by its story.
With that said, Michel Simon’s performance is absolutely phenomenal. The other characters do at times feel somewhat characterized, hindering them from giving the performance they seemed capable of.
I wish they’d make a film based on what happened behind the scenes of La Chienne. It mirrors some of the film to a a horrific extent to the point of Simon threatening Renoir with a gun.
Though there is a lot to commend La Chienne for, I never found myself truly engulfed in the film. I hope that I someday find the magic in Renoir’s films, but until then I’m excited to watch Fritz Lang’s version of the story in Scarlet Street.
