The Wong family kung fu school gets smacked around by a rival school. Wong Fei-hong gets fed up with the abuse and goes to learn from his fathers master. After one of the rival schools members kills some of the towns people Wong Fei-hong becomes enraged trains even more comes back and gets his revenge.

Good fighting with an OK story. If I knew more about the historic significans of the story it might have landed higher.

Good lessons on what kung fu is really about (no, it’s not the friends we make along the way 😆) , but the “challenge” this film centre's around isn’t particularly interesting 💀
Fights are great and I enjoyed the murderous “sharp kick” 🤣 Love when a martial arts film has a lethal move

Interesting! Lau Kar-Leung's second film, not quite with the sophistication of his third, Executioners of Shaolin, or the non-stop brilliance of Dirty Ho, much later down the line - in fact an entirely different film from either.
And I don't mean that pejoratively - this is a complete stylistic shift from what I've seen so far, or rather, he would completely stylistically shift following this. Everything is full of motion, I dont think a single shot is still. And the amount of handheld camera used is astounding, it really works for the tension inbetween the here less frequent fights. That rain scene!
There's strong whiffs of consistent themes down the line too - the failed master, the idea of clans as families, and even masculine loyalties as homosexual relationships.

And I don't mean that pejoratively - this is a complete stylistic shift from what I've seen so far, or rather, he would completely stylistically shift following this. Okay, so I was really enjoying this. The master student relationship in this was very charming. But then the movie ends, in a satisfying way, and the movie continues for 15 minutes with pointless nonsense. The fight for the pao (firework things) was boring the first time, and the second time it is even more boring as it is treated as the extended finale . No one gives a shit. That made it lose half a star, but still good.
