to say the very least, this is a really bizarre film but it’s also not, this was one of the most uncanny experiences i’ve had watching film and it’s not even about shock value, it’s the way everything unfolds, the way these two interact, and how the ending feels completely foreshadowed yet still somehow unexpected, Dumont holds this constant sense of uncertainty and i went in blind but couldn’t shake the feeling that something erratic was going to happen the entire time, it’s such a patience driven film built on two performances that feel almost too real, there were moments where i felt like i had seen these exact expressions in real life and could predict what they were going to say before they even said it, the precision is what makes it unsettling because the framing, camera distance, movement, and placement of bodies are all quietly signaling something beneath the surface, it’s a lot more intentional than it first appears, and what bothers me most is how familiar it feels because stories like this aren’t too far off in real time which makes it interesting because it feels instinctively cohesive but hard to grasp.
