Palette cleanse after the red scare propaganda hogwash of I Was A Communist for the FBI, one of the most anti-capitalistic films of the era by one an openly Marxist director and starring John Garfield, both of whom would be blacklisted in only a few short years after its release.

Really loved Garfield here. I've seen him take on more worn-down working man roles in He Ran All the Way and The Breaking Point, but here he's a slick lawyer who thinks he can have it all until it all unravels leading to a devastating final scene.

Definitely see the influence this had on Scorsese from the themes (Money! Family!) and tone to the gorgeous on location cinematography and haunting score.

I don't know if it was because I was tired when we watched this in class or what but this movie was so boring im sorry,,, and the fact that the girl turned into a I can fix him type character after he was pushy,,, hated that sm 😭 cool shots ig. Also I thought the 'femme fatale' (that wasnt but wanted to be) was joan crawford for so long LMAOO
