Eight tales based on the most brutally terrifying Mexican traditions and legends, an anthology of haunting stories woven into the fabric of the Mexican culture, some told through the centuries and some new, but all equally frightening. Bogeymen, trolls, ghosts, monsters, all brought to life. Time for Aztec sacrifices. This is the Day of the Dead.

I couldn’t even begin to describe the dread and stress I got from even rewatching this. I watched some (hence why I wont mark it as a complete rewatch) of this movie almost a decade ago. it was purely from curiosity too because my parents were watching this & ofc I just have to be curious so I looked this up on my own & got absolutely spooked.

if you don’t know what this movie is it’s basically an anthology movie. 8 different stories, all surrounding mexican folklore & legends. being hispanic (mexican & salvadoran) I am pretty familiar with folklore. specifically duendes, aluxes, drug lords, black market, & just overall crazy shit that I never expect anyone to believe or want to get into.

i am only going to talk about 3 specific stories that basically fucked me up for life. The biggest contender is Drena. drena is from drenar which means drain, in this context of the story it’s she drains. whole story is, girl finds a dead body, steals his cigarette, smokes it at home, & this duende (troll/goblin/elf) appears. it says dont be afraid bitch, you have 12 hours to drain your sisters menstrual blood, & if you dont do it i will suck your soul through your asshole. if you’re reading this & wondering if she completed this task successfully — no she didn’t. last minute she trips & spills it everywhere then at the end her sister finds her getting possessed as im led to assume. this only stuck with me because the wooden puppet guillermo del toro looking duende is actually pretty terrifying. to me at least, even now it gives me heartburn.

Second contender was La cosa más preciada/The most precious thing. This was a story about a couple going to a cabin & an alux (goblin or spirit) shows up. It steals the girlfriend & the most graphic rape scene plays out (you do see alux dick). she ends up passing out in the forest, boyfriend finds her, cops show up & he is taken away. The girlfriend is sent to a psych ward where she is pregnant. do i even need to explain why this fucked me up?

Third & last contender is Jaral de Berrios. It’s a story about 2 outlaws taking shelter in a cursed house where they are seduced & murdered by spirits. i mean this was pretty silly because in a scene this guy is eating pussy while the evil woman spirit is becoming bloody. Then later he hangs himself (im assuming) on a tree outside the house. kid me thought this was pretty gnarly shit.

i dont even know if the payoff after finding this again is even worth it. i only recommend this if you are curious, like horror anthologies, & you like blood, guts, sex, & weird folklore. this was today’s episode of rewatching horror movies that fucked me up as a kid.
