I have no knowledge of the manga and only a vague knowledge of her father's paintings, so I went into this expecting essentially a biopic. Turns out we know almost nothing about her life and they just bullshited their way though the (many) gaps, creating a fantastical story told through 2010 anime style animation, monotone voice acting (apparently I bought the dub), and an incredibly dull plot that feels like a series of quick little blips of story that don't amount to much. I learned next to nothing, so my hopes of a biopic are dead and there aren't any real character or story arcs, so it barely even qualifies as a movie. I see a bunch of reviews about how they love how calm this movie is; like a summer breeze. Maybe I'm the outlier here, but a story with no drama, humor, suspense, round characters, or development doesn't sound enjoyable at all; maybe just watch a screen saver instead. I don't even understand what they were trying to do here; they didn't tell Katsushika's story in any meaningful way (it doesn't even highlight her art or talent) and they certainly didn't entertain. This movie was a half-full glass of room temperature water.
