To be honest, and maybe I'll end up getting called out for it, 'The Batman' from 1989 isn't as awesome as some people make it out to be (I’m Sorry😭). I really don't like the way Batman is killing random bad guys, Jack Napier killing Bruce Wayne's parents instead of just being a regular criminal (should be Joe Chill), Alfred letting Vicki Vale into the Bat-cave, some of the casting ( especially Gordon and Harvey Dent 🤦🏾♂️), and the whole story in this movie was just all over the place.
Another thing that really annoys me In this movie is how it goes over the top in ignoring Batman's "no-kill rule", to the point where I'm not sure how anyone can think Keaton's Batman is the best version. He purposely kills a bunch of bad guys at Axis Chemicals with a bomb that blows up the whole place, and he even tries to get the Joker killed a couple of times. He almost gets him once with the Batwing and another time right at the end, where he makes the Joker plunge to his death.
No doubt, Matt Reeves' take on Gotham is my absolute favorite. But I'd also say, Tim Burton's version comes in at my second pick, especially because Burton did a fantastic job of bringing it to life and packing it full of atmosphere. The city kinda feels like it's been hidden away for ages, deep and mysterious, filled with all sorts of oddities. Burton’s Gotham was the standout part for me in this movie.
Overall, I get that this movie is super important because of when it was made, it was a game-changer, and it’s a classic for a lot of people. I understand that completely. But to be honest, I'm not a big fan. I guess I'm just overthinking or hating it too much, but it just doesn't click with me. I do like Keaton and Jack Nicholson, though. I think they were great in their roles. But the script, some of the casting, and Tim Burton's take on Batman just didn't work for me. Keaton/Nicholson really had to do the best they could with what they were given. 🤷🏿♂️
