Blast Argento’s Suspiria lighting into a Jean Rollin-directed version of The Heroic Trio and you might get something like this. I had a love/hate relationship with this in its first half, but at a certain point Princess has a break, overcome by murderous horniness and it all kinda ties together.
I might prefer a movie without any male presence. Does Tinam really add anything here? His triggers/history doesn’t pay off in a meaningful way; instead he’s best served as a sounding board to Kitty. But Kitty has Sister Cindy. Nix Tinam and involve Kitty and Cindy further, imo.
Tinam, while I would have preferred a different narrative role, functions as the heteronormative vessel of sexuality, ie this is where the nerds go “that could be me!” This movie is sexy as hell, some cringe, but mostly effective. I guess I just don’t think the hetero representation is worth it in the grand scheme, which ties into my overarching criticism of the male gaze. I mean, the lesbianism is still male-centric, but there’s also a huge chunk of female power at play.
You can’t understate the style, action, and choreography. They’re stellar. Even the humour, like Kitty blasting dude’s nuts, is both funny and graphic. I’m on board! The humour often works because it’s incorporated into impressive physicality of the stunts. The women are always stealing the show. Give me more wormy male slaves to Princess. Let’s just dominate men at every turn. Go ham!
The editing and narrative foundation feels choppy or rushed at first. I had some difficulty keeping track of each character for a minute; Princess’ introduction was a little out of left field. A rewatch would easily benefit the experience. But even that mixed first half has a plethora of “whoa!” moments that provide action packed ecstasy hits. One thing this film is not, is boring. So maybe it either could have used 10 more minutes or a changed up script. But this is fun, really good looking, in more ways than one, and a gem I think would hit hard for a lot of fans of cult flicks. If this gets released on blu ray stateside, I’d probably pick it up.
