Groundbreaking work in Cartoon Saloon’s first animated feature. Some scenes are breathtaking (That segment featuring the song about Pangur Bán is way to fucking sick) while others are eyebrow raising (I.e. the racist depictions of Brother Assoua and Brother Tang). Although Moore allegedly has apologized for the monks’ appearances in later years and claimed it was “historically accurate depiction of POCs in Medieval Ireland, it’s not a valid excuse. Especially since it came out in 2009, Moore and the rest of the Studio knew better. That begin said, Kells is really pretty and impressive for a movie that was hand drawn on computer with digital assets. Great watch, but should only be consumed ethically with a historical lens. Shoutout Brendan Gleeson.
