Robert Ryan is disgustingly racist in this and it ends up killing him and strips him of getting a clean slate on life,Belafonte is stripped of seeing and having a family due to that racism and Begley is removed from settingly down due to ryan. The mission seemingly would've worked had they not had an outright bigot on their team this movie has a really compelling heist and sad ending. It also shows how greed and being backed up against the wall can drive a man to certain death.

omg just watched for my film class and I have to say Johnny was my absolute favorite !! Every scene he had had my attention CAUGHT (charismatic as hell, complex and with an interesting story, the relationship he has with his daughter is so cute too) It really made me upset when his balloon got exploded like I was ATTACHED. I don't know if I would have enjoyed it that much without him lmao. Was surprised at seeing the theme of racism too (when the flop guy said the n slur I gasped so loud I was not expecting it at all) Did not like the ending though, felt very rushed and unsatisfying

Definitely interesting for the time! Loved Shelley Winters even though I’m usually not a fan. And I love the way Robert Wise moves the camera. Keeps you guessing and interested.
