Nobody really talks about this movie anymore. “Tu Dors, Nicole” was compared a lot to “Frances Ha” when it first came out, but if Frances Halliday found her way in the end, Nicole Gagnon was still slumming it in les banlieus Québécois the last we saw her. Rewatching this, I thought I was going to feel like I’ve outgrown this film, but instead I remain impressed by just how confidently and lovingly made it is. I’m sure there are plenty of movies before this that were also about slackers lolling about, drinking beer, hosting jamming sessions in the living room, watching tv, et cetera. “Tu Dors, Nicole” is still the one that truly gets it right. I wouldn’t be surprised if in a few years this movie gets brought up again in a good light.
