Questioning reality is such a fundamental concept to human existence. As we continue question what is real, how things work, and why things behave the way they do, we continue to evolve. It’s very much so the reason we as a species have come as far as we have (or maybe it was shrooms…).
Whether you believe in the stoned ape theory or not, this questioning of reality makes for an exceptional concept for a film. Combine that with the 🐐director and you have this masterpiece.
The only thing I really knew going into this was that my high school comp sci teacher used the concept of dreaming within dreams to explain loops and recursion to us. Clearly I didn’t understand that at the time since I was told I would fail the AP exam if I took it. What’s funny is I still don’t really understand the concepts now 7 years later. I do think that made me enjoy it more though. As I began to try and piece together a coherent story with logic that could be followed, I realized the true storyline was devolving more and more as we fell deeper and deeper into dreams within dreams. As we devolved we fell further and further into Leo’s characters subconscious to the point where we truly did not know whether reality was reality or where we were.
The ending is honestly perfect. His subconscious placed him in the exact place to forgive himself but allowed room for questions of reality to continue with the top spinning with the possibility of falling but not allowing the viewer to see. Well done Nolan. You never fail to amaze me.
