i only got to see the last like 50 minutes of this movie because i missed the other 2 classes where we were watching it but after watching the last 59 i have no desire to go back and actually watch the whole thing. this movie is visually very pretty like it makes alot of sense it won awards for that specifically. on the other hand the main character is actually so retarded. my teacher mentioned later in the class that she exclaims that she does not belong in france because in her words “im asian i dont eat apples i eat mangos” thats actually gotta be the dumbest shit ive ever heard. the scene where eliane is visiting her old plantation and cutting the rubber tree herself is such a painfully oblivious scene. like why the fuck am i going to feel bad for this woman she is a white woman within this country she is not “asian” like she claims shes literally jst another colonial force taking advantage of the Vietnamese people and profiting off of them. she has no place in vietnam really in the first place she is part of the problem. i dont like the way this movie babys her and has like no critical voice against her we are jst supposed to be like aww poor her. you are not vietnamese person u are a white woman who OWNS A PLANTATION like dude fuck off

weird thought but i feel like this would function better as a stage play with its pacing and melodrama i think it was thrive on a stage and didn’t quite take advantage of the tools provided by film as opposed to another medium
