I actually liked this but admittedly my viewing of it was ruined because yesterday was too hot so I kept taking many breaks. I just finished it today. I thought the film was very interesting about corruption in this era of Egypt set in the 1930s. It was a take how poor people sell their ethics and integrity to survive in this horrid society. We see Mahgoub forcing himself to marry a woman he doesn't want to be with to become more higher in the upper class. Or even Ihsan as she betrays her poor socialist lover Ali Taha to advance her and her family as she has a pressure to marry a wealthier man. Ironically she is kept by a wealthier man instead of actually marrying on. And it's sad as she marries Mahgoub when the wealthy man Asim Bey comes to visit Ihsan and I'm pretty sure has sex with her while Mahgoub is forced to deal with this corrupt society. There's a sense of class struggle as there is such a stark division between the upper class and the lower class and there's a lack of freedom of speech. Many of the characters are disillusioned with the higher powers and betray the ideals they once believed in. Many of the characters find themselves isolated in this society. I found one aspect was when I think the princess or something was not able to read Arabic so she read in the Latin script showing how out of touch these people in power in Egypt were in the 1930s. While I don't know if this is exactly a perfect portrayal for this era given Nasser's hold on the film industry and his insistence on promoting films about nationalist ideals, perhaps Cairo 30 is another example of that propaganda. But I am inclined to believe this because tbh western imperialism sucks ass and I would not be shocked if this was a realistic depiction of this era in Egyptian history. The cast was fantastic especially HOMEGIRL Soad Hosny who is amazing. I really wish I could see more of her work but I doubt I will be able to given the lack of films available with subtitles (again pls anyone is there any Egyptian films websites with English subtitles? Like the way there is for Indian films which is Einthusan?). I also thought Ahmed Mazhar was wonderful in his acting and Hamdy Ahmed was great too!
