The Mangler 2
2001 | Stephen King | Lance Henriksen

Can someone please tell me who asked for a “The Mangler” sequel? Cause we need to get that person locked up, immediately!

Tobe Hooper’s 1995 Stephen King adaption “The Mangler” is a pretty mediocre film. Not good, but not too bad either. I think most people really hated it when it came out and it wasn’t particularly successful at the box office, so the question I ask myself is, how does a film like that get a sequel? There is no money to be made, no prestige to be gained and no real fanbase to satisfy. Horror sequels and the never ending questions to why they exist. But let’s be honest, most of us live for this kind of terrible horror sequel, am I right? ;)

But for whatever reason, we ended up with this sequel. But how do you make a sequel to a film about an evil laundry-folding machine? Exactly, you just don’t. You take the laundry-folding machine and replace it with a computer virus.

“The Mangler” goes “The Lawnmower Man”, or even worse: “Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace”.

This film is not quite beyond cyberspace, it’s beyond stupid. We have really uncomfortable hacker and tech conversations that think they are smart but aren’t, terribly annoying and unlikable asshole characters, and a look that is beyond cheap. And I really hate the wannabe fancy-DTV-C movie-sequel to and already not good film-early 2000s-editing. The dialogues are terrible and when I say terrible I mean like utter dogshit. I kinda dig the score, but it is sooo repetitive.

The whole story is so utterly ridiculous, I won’t even bother complaining about it. Add to that some weird molestation subplot, a chef and the least threatening ‘villain’ of all time and voilà: you have a screenplay. And then there is a moment where the film kinda tries to get meta. I can’t.

And the performances are terrible too. All of the leads are so bad and even Lance Henriksen, one of my favorite actors, is not good. I mean, they make him quote the Spice Girls, so yeah.

“The Mangler 2” is exactly what you’d expect it to be. Bad. Very bad. A sequel nobody needed, but one we still got. Even better: there is a third one. Can’t wait to watch that one.

“Sure beats bitch aisle.”

Very bad but I was laughing throughout. The music, the fashion, the jokes, the glaring technical issues, the computer stuff, just all of it. Brain dead, z-grade, silly, pointless trash. What a delight!
