With such a great title I really wanted to love this movie and while Fred Olen Ray’s Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers unapologetically delivers what it says on the box, I was still left wanting more.

Gumshoe Jack Chandler (John Henry Richardson) hits the LA pavement in search of runaway Samantha (Linnea Quigley) who has fallen in with a cult of chainsaw worshipping sex workers, lead by a mysterious stranger (Gunnar Hansen) and his crazed sidekick Mercedes (Michelle Bauer)

While the Texas Chainsaw Massacre reference is obvious, particularly in the casting of Gunnar Hansen, the Egyptian death cult vibes feel more like a tribute to the Herschel Gordon Lewis gore fests of the 60s, and this is even pieced together with the same minimum level of competence.

Richardson is a sub-Frank Drebin, mugging when he should be dead-pan, Quigley is a certified cutie buuuut lacks comedic timing and it is obvious why Gunnar Hansen is most famous for wearing a skin mask and having minimal dialogue. Michelle Bauer is the saving grace, hamming it up with glee as Mercedes (and she looks pretty fucking fantastic while topless and wielding a chainsaw).

although i really didn’t like the main male character. he was trying to portray those cocky humorous 70s noir detectives that have their own voiceover surrounding them and didn’t sell it at all. his jokes were bland and unfunny, his lines were filled with so much bullshit, i didn’t wanna see him on screen anymore.

but what boosts this up is that i really like how deaths happen even though they’re off screen. the script is flipped on horny men using women as objects, now the women are using them as sacrifices as if their life isn’t worth it. 

the whole cult thing with chainsaws and a god, really reminds me about herschel gordon lewis’ blood feast. the concept is very flawed and is just an inclusion to create a motive for madness. but it helps this film in its goofy nature. 

i wouldn’t expect much from this film especially with the great poster. visually, this film has great use of color and for a low budget movie, this is a very pretty movie and the scenes don’t feel nauseating at all. but if you want some mindless fun then this isn’t a bad watch.
