Repulsive, dumb, unintelligible are ways to describe the story of Naked Lunch. Brilliant, meditative, and complex is another.
Naked Lunch is a mess of ideas from a previously unadaptable novel that reflects on the life of it's author. How does Cronenberg do it? By creating a world that only could have come from a fucked up but insane mind. Cronenberg seems to be the king of adapting weird and unadaptable books into films such as with Crash, Cosmopolis, and The Dead Zone.
The film perfectly reflects the writing process while also being so fucking confusing that it is hard to take the film seriously, but it absolutely works on every regard not only due to its themes and style, but also it's monotone, yet fascinating, lead performance and jazzy music that adds feelings of uneasy to this bizarre world inhabited by drigs, sex, and writer's aspirations.
