1/52 of The Criterion Challenge 20231. Random Number Generator (#1039)
A surprisingly entertaining fly-on-the-wall glimpse into the political/sexual/societal discussions surrounding the Women’s Liberation movement that was also at some times confusing and some times laugh out loud funny (“For years and years I’ve been wondering, Mr. Mailer, when you dip your balls in ink, what color ink is it?”) I didn’t have much (any) context going into this but I found it amusing how Norman Mailer spent much of the time telling the panelists and the audience that they misunderstood the meanings of his writing, which leads me to conclude that he’s a pretty poor writer if he needs to explain every detail of his piece to a room full of people who read it (lol).
I don’t have much to comment on regarding the actual filmmaking but apart from obvious edits to cut what probably was a 3 hour event into less than 90 minutes, I felt like I was actually there watching this panel unfold in real time which was impressive to me.
Also I was reminded of when I saw Quentin Tarantino at the Town Hall about a month and a half ago and he, too, got heckled from some audience members.
