a pleasant surprise. the obvious metaphor is beside the point, because all of the unrelenting tension and subsequent payoffs are totally earned. while a more swagless director may have chosen to shoot everything in close-up or one-shot, dwan supplements these close-quarters interior scenes with equally nail-biting exterior sequences, captured mostly in moving wides. if alan dwan can do this much with this material, i am excited to see what else he’s capable of. 

also shout-out to the cast, one of the all-time great ensembles.
