I was absolutely blown away by Robert Siodmak’s The Spiral Staircase. A 1946 murder mystery thriller/horror, that’s subtle in its scares. But what really stands out is its gothic cinematography, and its many jaw dropping stylistic choices. The use of lighting and camera movements adds to the horror of the murders. The use of the killer’s eye, as we go into their point of view.
I was picking up on moments that clearly influenced other horror films. The way they did the hidden killer was very Friday the 13th, especially a scene where the victim verbally notices they know the killer. It also feels like one of the most Hitchcockian non Hitchcock films, with the black and white cinematography, reminded me of Psycho specifically.
The Spiral Staircase is a stellar thriller that’s actually free on YouTube, so if you’re looking for a horror film under 90 minutes, I would absolutely recommend this.
