ohh yes, another freak with issues. love this guy
while the film itself doesn’t do the story/plot much justice and fails to keep you entertained many many times, it manages to hook you in just as much with the technical aspects of it. Mister Designer has one of the prettiest set designs i have ever seen in film. it’s like watching live paintings, and they look so very beautiful on screen. the camera movements & angles are intimate, as we every so often follow Platon Andreyevich through tracking shots, giving the anxious feeling of creeping in a corner and following him without him knowing. the cinematography is a blessing to this film; the way they light around that car in the woods toward the end of the film using backlighting and then the same for Andreyevich running GODDAMNNN.
i love how the setting is St. Petersburg like in Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevsky, and i swear this is exactly how i imagined it looking like when i read it last summer. also this guy gives HUGE Raskolnikov vibes which is a bonus in my book (no pun intended, but i did love that book), but also at one point i was starting to see similarities with Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne (not Batman! Bruce Wayne!!) portrayal. it’s clear this guy hates himself and is trying to cope with his miserable life, and if you don’t know me, well that’s my cup of tea when it comes to characters: they must fucking hate themselves and be somewhat toxic. i also can’t help but speak my mind on how lynchian this is, really made me wonder if Oleg Teptsov took inspiration from David Lynch or if it was the other way around. and don’t let me start on the soundtrack, it is pure reminiscent of Lynch’s Rabbits in my head although it should be the other way around since this came out way way way before, but whatever, i’ve seen Rabbits first, suck it.
