This is a MASTERPIECE through and through. Every angle it presents is delivered in a way that can be talked about and dissected forever. It’s a bit like eyes wide shut in this way lol. Every decision feels so intentional. Its immersiveness is delivered through such extreme restraint and is so seamlessly integrated into the world of the film as a whole. I feel such dense films (and this complaint applies to tv too) can often struggle to avoid just becoming plateaus that up the ante at every half hour mark. At a point, you lose sight of where you started. In this film, the first scene informs the last and the last scene informs the first (in a metaphorical sense), everything that is revealed or gleaned, from the mundane to the ultra-serious, makes what is watched before it richer, and not just in a superficial sense like in Denis Villeneuve films where the twist makes you go “oh, yeah that makes sense.” Information isn’t retconned into the film. It’s depicted in its completion from a subjective and objective perspective and is heart-wrenching anyways. It’s not tricking the audience, it’s deception and repression through the lens of our protagonist. That’s some good fucking writing.
