Besides the obvious problematic elements to the story (it's 1920s sexual politics, what can I do?), this is actually a pretty heartbreaking silent melodrama. The whole thing is carried by an absolutely devastating performance from Lon Chaney, in quite possibly his best performance. The sadness that his face communicates is indescribable, the mark of such a legendarily great actor. I'm glad he's the reason I'm an actor.
