He Who Gets Slapped

A fool is always smiling.

He who gets slapped is one of the first silent films (out of the 5 or so I've seen) that I have truly been captivated by. Did I like un chien andalou more? Sure! But I enjoyed watching this more (if that makes sense).

About a year ago I would've laughed at even the thought of finding a silent film funny or emotional. I'm acctually very happy I did with this because now they same a whole lot less daunting.

Wow, this feels so modern even down to some of the camera techniques.
Such a sad and darkly funny film, it's a shame that so many people will probably be dissuaded by the age of it

Oh my god I don’t even know where to start! I’m absolutely in love with this movie! Lon Chaney is such a great actor, and he is so good at storytelling. My favorite scene is where He Who Gets Slapped is being slapped in front of all the clowns during his performance and is getting flashbacks from the scientist laughing at him when the baron slapped him, the scene is just so well done! Everything in this film is so symbolic, and the parallels from the circus to his old life are incredible. I’ll never get over this movie.
