This is one of my new favorite films, holy shit, where to begin !!! The mean girl being a wheelchair user, the bff with a crush on Chicklet, the two surfer dudes who were in love, Captain Monica Stark, the ally Bettina, the “Swedish exchange student”, the campy dialogue … Chicklet had one racially questionable alter though 🤨

Nicholas Brendan has passed away aged only 54

Famous the world over for his role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (which I still haven’t fully completed watching - sorry Cass!) as Xander, where he played the sort of every man goofball sidekick (the Shaggy of the Scooby Gang if you will) in later life he sadly struggled with alcoholism and significant problematic behaviour, and found an outlet for his struggles through art.

He didn’t have a significant big screen presence (although Coherence is a really good sci-fi mystery) and his role as a surfer dude in Robert Lee King’s adaption of Charles Busch’s Psycho Beach Party is a lot of fun!

Lauren Ambrose is Chicklette, a Gidget-esque surfer gal with multiple personality disorder who is suspected of a series of un-alivings on Malibu beach. Brendon is Starcat her psych major surfer crush object. Thomas Gibson (thankfully far away from a hot tub) is rhyming surf guru Kanaka who takes a hilarious shine to Chicklette’s Dominatrix persona, creator Charles Busch in full drag fulfills the role of Police Detective Monica Stark and Neighbours Goddess Kimberly Davies in a rare Hollywood role portrays horror flick starlet Bettina Barnes! Amy Adams makes an early appearance as Chicklette’s love rival and Aunt Zelda from Sabrina is a stone cold Fox as Chicklette’s mum!

This gets an A from Mo Dee for sticking to themes with it’s fun and funny parody of 50s horror and 60s beach movies, plus a general love of Hawaiian shirts and rear projection surf sequences, all told with camp dialogue packed with teen lingo and double entendre.
