i can’t believe there’s a sequel to the grindhouse classic ‘basket case’, a film i loved more than i probably should’ve. this sequel felt like a complete tonal shift from the original, which i guess was sort of bad and good at the exact same time. it embraces dark comedy, using more elaborate grotesque monster designs rather than the more cheap raw designs of the original which made it look like a grindhouse movie, i kinda miss the complete lack of polish, but the increase in budget really allows them to use a lot more detail within the use of their practical effects, replacing the trashy, cruder effects of basket case (1982). i felt the complete shift form the og to this was very jarring, they felt like they barely even coexist together due to three basically being polar opposite, as this film focuses less on the brothers and more on a family of freaks who look exactly like belilal, and it’s less psychological and more of a whacky monster, creature feature which embraces its vulgarity to the extreme and this is basically 90 minutes of vibes. i sort of missed the simplicity of the original, replacing the brothers dynamic for a really bizarre sex scene which i can’t determine if i loved or hated, but either way it was random to say the least!! i like how this sequel tries to be different to its predecessor, and that’s something i’ll always respect.
