I’m a fiend for the whole ‘movies that could have been’ sub genre. There is a great fantasy horror noir book series called Sandman Slim where a character owns a video store that, via dark magic, is able to access movies that could have been. The Lynch directed Return of the Jedi. Kubrick’s Napoleon. And I’m sure the Nic Cage and Tim Burton Superman would be high on the rental list.

The Death of Superman Lives is a great doco that explores the holy grail of unmade superhero flicks (although that George Miller Justice League would have been awesome too). What could feel like a quality YouTube deep dive, is elevated by access to quite the some truly impressive taking heads.

Kevin Smith gives his side of the scripting story (which we have all heard before but it never gets any less funny), coupled with the subject of many of his thanagarian snare beast inspired jabs John Peters. WB big wig Lorenzo Bonaventura sits down (so that is what he looks like) and the biggest get is Tim Burton himself!

Sadly we don’t get a Cage interview but there is a lot of interesting archival footage of him wearing the suit, that was seen here for the first time.

Rewatched this the same night after seeing Superman, and I still find it funny that Kevin Smith is made to be a big part of this doc till you find out how pretty quickly he got shuttered out from the rest of the making of this cancelled project.

I remember the first and second time I've watched this, it makes me a lil miserable afterwards cause you remember this movie does not exist after learning so many stories, concept art, and screen tests of its development, you and your brain would want to see the final product and your brain expects it to. And honest to god this could've been my favorite superman film, probably is in some dimension out there were this materialized. It fs would’ve bombed back then but maybe wouldve been in the cult status camp today. I’d be lying if I wasn’t intrigued by a "daylight focused Tim Burton Superman movie starring Nicolas Cage" and it sounded like it was gonna be some very industrial nightmare sci fi frankenstein-esque superhero movie it wouldve fit perfectly in the 90s, like sign me the fuck up what?!

But we will forever have the cgi Nicolas Cage superman cameo from the flash tho right?....Right?....
