A livello di trama è abbastanza semplice anche se sul finale è interessante il ruolo del senso di colpa e la rivelazione sulla morte di Melissa. Il film però brilla veramente a livello tecnico con delle innovazioni che anche oggi a 60 anni dalla sua uscita risultano attuali e riescono a creare paura; ad esempio gli zoom improvvisi oppure la famosa scena in cui Eswai rincorre un proprio sosia per otto stanze identiche. Anche la bambina in sé è estremamente inquietante e sarà recuperato questo trope più avanti in tantissimi altri film.

Another incredible Bava flick! I’m super into his style at this point. Obviously all this movies have really amazing lighting but I really loved the production design on this one.

A desolate location and a crumbling world - Bava’s ideal playground. Among his toys are the stunning colors, his smoke, the small town/villa location and the pure panic slowly growing even in the most skeptic character. Mario turns every frame of this thing into a painting, there are 100 shots you could hang up in your wall in it. The master of horror framing and composition. It is better than Blood and Black Lace because it plays it more loose with its plot and just lets the vibe take over. We do get some explanation, but it mostly just lets the supernatural do its thing. Really fun one too.
