*" There's a piece of Cordell in every cop.
**Every time arresting some mutt isn't enough, because we know they'll be back on the streets before we even do the paperwork.
**Every time we pull a trigger and it feels good, because no lawyers can reverse that.
It all comes down to justice and pressure. There's only that much difference between a cop and a maniac cop*. "
he's back from the dead , but the movie plays him differently.
he's not just a silent killing machine this time , he's reimagined as a more sympathetic figure , like he still remembers the badge he used to wear.
he still tears through the city , but now he chooses who deserves it.
that's why the weird "friendship" works.
he teams up with a Times Square serial killer , and the guy actually befriends him , takes him back to his apartment for a while.
and then there's the bus.
when they hijack the prison bus with the police psychologist on board , one of the cons tries to get handsy with her , and Cordell steps in.
he doesn't say anything , he just shuts it down.
for a second he's not the Maniac Cop , he's just a cop again , protecting someone who can't protect herself.
and this time he finally gets what he came back for , he finds the three inmates who mutilated and killed him in prison , and while he's on fire he takes them out one by one.
same revenge story , but now you almost root for him because it's personal.

Easily giving this an 8/10
I know 4 stars seems a little crazy. But Maniac cop is one of my favorite slashers ever. I think this series is severely underrated and I wish we had more from it. Maniac cop 2 by all means should not have worked. The evil cop concept had been done in the first film, how could you possibly make a sequel? By making it bigger and better which is exactly what this sequel does. Maniac cop 2 had a budget of $4M which is insanely high compared to the $1M budget of the original. The sets are bigger, the stunts and action scenes are crazier, and the film just has a more polished feel to it. Claudia Christian plays a new main character named Susan and she does a great job. Really gets put through the wringer. Robert Davi is the other new main character and he plays Detective Sean who's a pretty interesting character but he's mainly just there to look cool. As for the Maniac cop himself... Robert Z'Dar does a great job again making Matt Cordell so terrifying. He gets a new look in this film and It's probably my favorite design of his. Cordell has the same goal and tragic backstory as the first film, but here he's given so much more to do and his character feels a lot more layered than in the first film. It's amazing and such a fun slasher. For that the 4 stars is justified for me. I really love that both films are the same concept but executed differently. The original is slow and mysterious while still having a bit of action. It sets up the character of Matt Cordell. Then the sequel ups that action a ton and pushes the story further. Both are amazing.
Side note: The Maniac Cop Rap is one of the greatest songs made for a movie and it is my mission to one day perform that rap at a karaoke night. It's on my bucket list I really wanna do it. Someone take me to karaoke please!!!

A wealth of interesting character actor faces; Robert Davi. Michael Lerner. Bruce Campbell. Clarance Williams III. Marco Rodriguez. Danny Trejo. And of course the big guy Robert Z'dar (both pre and post Maniac-Copification).

Best of the entire franchise, improves on what made the first good in every way but I still like 1 more if I'm being honest.
